Carlos Tejo began his artistic career in 1991, coinciding with his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Polytechnic Faculty of Valencia. Four years later, he received his first major grant and decided to move to Havana, where he spent a year. His experience in Cuba transformed his artistic practice from abstract painting to one much more narrative and figurative. The body and intimacy became central aspects of his discourse, combining painting with a growing interest in photography. In this transition, the process became a cardinal protagonist over the formal resolution of the object as the final product. Themes such as time, the ephemeral and other more political and social issues began to appear recurrently. By the end of 1997, his work focused on photography and video understood as tools for open projects. In the following years, he benefited from grants and support that led him to reside in cities such as São Paulo, Warsaw, Paris, or Cologne. Between 2000 and 2002, he lived between the United States and Spain. It was in the city of Seattle where he had the opportunity to expand his knowledge in the field of photography and where he began to show a marked interest in the performative. His artistic practice since 2006 has focused on performance, where -without abandoning mediums such as photography or video- he remains to this day.
