The necessary mistake
Performance

Collaboration by Hugo Pinho
April 24, 2009

In this project, I collaborated with the Portuguese artist Hugo Pinho. During the performance, Pinho played a melody in which, randomly, a mistake was generated in one of the notes. At that precise moment, I stood up from the chair and performed movements similar to those of an airport runway assistant guiding the plane in its approach to the boarding bridge. This performance explores the concept of mistake as a method, as a stimulus for creative action, and as an aesthetic tool. This advocacy of mistake seeks to alert us to the risks of considering ourselves holders of absolute truth. Through this approach, the performance prompts us to question our capacity to differentiate between what is morally right and wrong.
