In this performance, I draw a parallel between the chaos of Babel and the chaos caused by the diversity of languages in which I translate the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. I write each article of the declaration on a piece of paper, fold it, and place it in one of my pockets. When I approach someone, they insert their hand, pull out a paper, and read it aloud—whether or not they understand the language it’s written in. Between each reading, I perform brief actions that evoke the unease, frustration, and helplessness caused by the violation of these fundamental rights. The performance thus becomes a symbolic tower—a Babel that reflects the difficulty of achieving universal understanding and justice.
